Uni life can be a whirlwind – lectures, assignments, part-time gigs and the ever-looming “cozzie livs” (cost of living) crisis. But fear not! Striking a balance between your budget and living your best life is totally doable.
Let’s get into how you can live well without draining your wallet.
Budgeting without the brain rot
You’ve probably already heard the usual stuff: track your spending, prioritise essentials like rent, groceries and transport – and yep, they’re still solid tips. But let’s focus on something underrated: the humble home-cooked meal.
Real talk — I used to miss eating out. A lot. But it also meant my budget evaporated by midweek. So, I started brewing my own pour-over coffee (yep, I’ve become that person) and got into baking my current favorite dessert – a burnt Basque cheesecake. Not going to lie, it’s only gotten better with each attempt.
It’s turned into this chill routine that makes me feel like I’m not missing out on anything. These days, I save eating out for catching up with mates or celebrating a win. Cafe vibes but make it budget friendly.
Living large on a budget
Let’s talk about underrated escapes: nature. You don’t have to go far for great views, some of the best moments happen just a short ride (or walk) away.
Last year, I bought a second-hand bike, and it’s been the best budget-friendly decision. It doubles as a workout and a way to explore Melbourne’s quieter gems. Riding out to Point Ormond on a sunny afternoon? Feels like a mini getaway – minus the price tag.
Fresh air, free cardio, a killer view and it’s free? That’s a win.
Don’t forget the amazing walking tracks around campus or even checking out the Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus. You may even spot an echidna!
Reach out to supports available

Cook a meal, take a walk, create a budget plan or check in with a support service. Start small and you’re already winning. 💪
