IN AN EMERGENCY PHONE 000
In the event of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), every minute counts. A cardiac arrest causes the heart to stop effectively, leading to unconsciousness and cessation of breathing.
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are crucial in emergency situations, providing a life-saving bridge during sudden cardiac arrest until professional medical help arrives. Their importance cannot be overstated; they are simple to use, increase survival rates significantly, and are an essential component of first aid, ensuring safety and preparedness in any environment.
That’s why La Trobe has over 70 accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), across all our campuses.
In case of emergency, these machines can be found throughout student accommodation facilities, teaching facilities, sporting facilities and mobile units in security vehicles.
These portable AED machines are the most effective treatment for a sudden cardiac arrest. They deliver an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm during a sudden cardiac arrest.
Having as many available AEDs as possible, covering all our campuses is incredibly important. Every minute that it takes to bring an AED to a patient, it decreases their chance of survival by 7-10 percent. The early use of an AED in a first aid response is vital for increasing survival rates, enhancing CPR effectiveness, and ensuring timely intervention. Ultimately, helping to save lives and improve recovery outcomes.
It is important that you familiarise yourself with the locations of the AEDs across our campuses, so that you can be prepared to act in an emergency.
Never used a defibrillator before?
AEDs are user-friendly and provide clear instructions, so that any person who may need to operate one can do so.
