2024 Fellowship announced: Welcoming Universities amplify student voices

Welcoming Universities is pleased to launch its inaugural 2024 Student Advisory Committee Fellowships.

This program is a reciprocal approach to including and supporting the student voice in the Welcoming Universities initiative of Welcoming Australia and providing students with comprehensive recognition of their time and contribution. The program is offered to 8-10 student participants each year, who have lived, living or relevant work and/or study experience in cultural diversity, migration, diversity, equity, and inclusion, to contribute to the Welcoming Universities Student Advisory Committee.

Fellowships are open to current students who are studying at Australian universities (English language, undergraduate or postgraduate study), the fellowship is for one year, but may be extended if agreement is reached between Welcoming Universities and the student fellow.

The Student Advisory Committee fellows receive:

  • $500 stipend per year
  • 2 hours mentoring per year from either Welcoming Universities staff (Cate Gilpin or Aleem Ali),
or Welcoming University Advisory Committee members, or a combination from these people
(details of the Welcoming Universities Advisory Committee are on the Welcoming Australia
    website
, and mentoring sessions will need to be planned in consultation)
  • Invitation to key Welcoming Universities and Welcoming Australia events and programs,
including a free ticket to the Welcoming Australia symposium.
  • Connections, introductions, and opportunities provided through the Welcoming Australia and
    Welcoming Universities networks.

About Welcoming Universities

Welcoming Universities is a network to inspire and support Australian universities to develop a culture and practice of welcome, inclusion and belonging within their institutions, in the community, and across the higher education sector.

A big focus for Welcoming Universities is to privilege and listen to the student voice and ensure that students from culturally diverse backgrounds feel heard, valued, and included within Australian universities, and beyond this to build a feeling of belonging for students from all backgrounds.

To achieve their goals, Welcoming Universities is creating a Student Advisory Committee so that the student voice is part of all key conversations around Welcoming Universities work. The structure created around this is that of a fellowship so that members of the Student Advisory Committee receive some financial recognition for their participation, and professional development support to assist in career development.

Applications are due by 15 July, 2024.
Please email your application to Welcoming Universities Coordinator, Cate Gilpin, cate@welcoming.org.au.
