Registering for an ORCID identifier

Get credit for all your work by linking an ORCID identifier to your My Publications record. If you don't have a linked ORCID you will see a blue 'Add ORCID' button on your home page.

What is ORCID and why do I need an ORCID identifier?

A unique ORCID identification number is assigned to everyone who registers on the ORCID website. This number is like a scholarly fingerprint, it is yours alone and will not change – you can take it with you wherever your career leads you, and it will distinguish your research outputs and ensure they are correctly attributed and counted for your research impact.

How you can use your ORCID identifier

An ORCID should be shared as often as possible.

  • Connect your ORCID to My Publications to ensure your publications are quickly harvested and verified for you.
  • Use it whenever you submit a publication. Many journals now request this from authors.
  • Use it on websites, blogs, email signatures, public profiles and anywhere where colleagues and students can find you.
  • Enable automatic updates, so that new publications and datasets will be added to your ORCID profile
  • If you are applying for, or planning to work on an application for an ARC or NHMRC grant, these organisations have endorsed ORCID and encourage applicants to have an ORCID identifier.

More information about how to make the most of ORCID can be found in the ORCID Expert Help Guide on Research Profiles and Networks.
