Library loan policies

Here are the La Trobe University (LTU) policies related to borrowing from the Library.

Refer to these policies for information on:

Borrowing limits

The restrictions on what you can borrow depend on the type of Library patron you are. Select the relevant patron type below to see what you can borrow and for how long.

Note: You are responsible for all items borrowed and cannot transfer the borrowed item(s) to another person. If you don't return or renew your item(s) by the due date, penalties may apply.

Maximum number of requests (holds) at a time

If you want to borrow an item that is currently on loan, in storage or at another library, you can place a request to have it put on hold for you. The maximum number of requests you can place is outlined in the following table.

Patron type Number of requests
LTU students Up to 20
LTU staff Unlimited
Non-LTU patrons
(e.g. alumni, La Trobe College students/staff)
Up to 10

Overdue, damaged and lost items

If an item is not returned by its due date, it is considered overdue. When you have an item that is overdue, you will not be able to borrow additional items from the Library.

If an item is not returned within a certain amount of time after its due date (see table below), it is considered lost.

Type of item When item is considered lost
General 14 days after due date
Seven-day loan 7 days after due date
Three-hour loan 3 days after due date

Penalties for lost or damaged items

When an item is declared lost or damaged, a replacement fee (i.e. fine) of $95 will be added to your Library record and a block will be placed on your student record. For LTU students, this means you won't be able to re-enrol, change subjects, obtain your academic transcript or graduate until payment has been made in full.

You can view any outstanding Library fines in the 'Fines' section of My Account.

If a lost item is returned (undamaged), the fine will be removed. However, the fine will not be removed if it was returned more than 12 months overdue or the Library has already purchased a replacement copy. No refunds are given if an item is returned after its replacement fee has already been paid.

Note: If you don't pay a replacement fee within six months, your Library debt will be referred to the University Finance Branch for further action. This may result in additional charges being added to your debt.

Use of electronic resources (Terms and conditions)

Electronic resources are provided by LTU Library for the purposes of academic research and learning only.

The use of each electronic resource is governed by a specific licence agreement and all use must legally comply with the terms and conditions of the licence, which may be obtained by contacting the Collections team.

Restrictions for use of an individual resource can be viewed by selecting 'Show license' within the 'View it' section of the Library collections entry for that resource. (Note: This option is not available for all resources.)

Prohibitions include:

  • systematic downloading of content including by software (such as website crawlers or harvesters)
  • downloading copies of the database for archival use
  • distributing the electronic resource to another person
  • infringing the intellectual property rights in the electronic resource
  • modifying the electronic resource.

By accessing the electronic resource you further agree that:

  • La Trobe University does not give any guarantees, undertakings or warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to the accuracy, completeness, non-infringement and up-to-date status of the electronic resource.
  • Under no circumstances will La Trobe University be liable to you for any loss, damage or liability, direct or indirect, suffered or incurred by or attaching to you arising out of the use and reliance of the electronic resource.
  • Use in breach of the above terms and conditions may result in action under the University's Statutes, Regulations and Policies.
