Library FAQs

Here are some answers to questions that are frequently asked of La Trobe University (LTU) Library. Have a look to see if there are answers to questions that you may want to ask.

Online access

LTU students/staff

To access your Library account and online Library resources, use your LTU '@students.ltu.edu.au' or '@ltu.edu.au' username.

Other borrowers

To access your Library account and online Library resources (if eligible), you need to use your Library username and password.

Note: Your Library username should not look like an email address (i.e. it does not contain an '@' symbol).

To check the format of your username, see Your Library account.

Anyone with a valid Library membership is able to access My Account to view their current loans. If you cannot successfully login, you are most likely entering an incorrect username and/or password.

To check the format of your username and view information on the password you should use, see Your Library account.

You should first check the Library troubleshooting page to see if the issue you're experiencing is listed.

If your issue is not listed or the suggested solution didn't work for you, please report the problem to the Library.

In the Library

The eduroam network allows university students and staff to connect to LTU's wireless network using their LTU (or home university) login.

For more information, see WiFi access in the Library.

Study rooms can only be booked at the following campus libraries:

  • David Mann Library (Albury-Wodonga) – book at the service desk.
  • Gambetta Library (Mildura) – book at the TAFE library desk or call (03) 5022 3758.
  • Sydney Campus Library - book from the library computers or at the service desk.

The Borchardt Library at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus has AccessAbility and Inclusion rooms that can also be booked, but only by students that have registered with AccessAbility and Inclusion. Please contact the Library to book one of these rooms.

Other rooms and study spaces are available but cannot be booked in advance.

For more information, see Places to study.

Other options

If you are at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus, you can book meeting spaces and alcoves in The Learning Commons (TLC) building, which is next to the Library.

For students

We offer one-to-one appointments with Librarians, who can assist you with finding and evaluating information, referencing and can support you through your learning journey.

You can also book an appointment with an Academic Skills Advisor for advice on your assessments, preparing for exams, academic writing, study habits and more.

If you don't require a formal appointment (e.g. you just have a question or need help finding a resource), you can go to the Library service desk within face-to-face support hours or use the online chat to speak with a Librarian or Peer Learning Advisor (i.e. an experienced student trained to assist you).

Book an appointment with a Librarian or Academic Skills Advisor

For researchers

We offer one-to-one consultations with Research Librarians where you can discuss and get advice on issues particular to researchers and higher-degree research students.

For more information on what topics can be discussed, see Expert help and training.

Request a consultation with a Research Librarian

LTU staff and students can take photographs or short videos for personal use or class assignments, using hand-held devices and without formal authorisation, provided staff and other users are not photographed or inconvenienced.

Other types of filming and photography (e.g. for commercial purposes, wider distribution or that requires furniture to be moved) will first need permission granted from the Library.

For more information, including the form to request permission, see Filming and photography in the Library.

Borrowing

To borrow physical items, you can either take them to the Library service desk or use one of the self-checkout machines, which are available at our Melbourne (Bundoora), Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton campus libraries.

For more information, see Borrow from the Library.

Borrow through LTU Library

If you can't find what you need in our collections, you may be able to request an item from an external (non-LTU) library and have it delivered to your nearest LTU campus library (or even posted to you, if you're eligible for Remote delivery).

For more information on requesting items from external libraries, see Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Service.

Borrow directly from an external library

LTU students/staff that are visiting another academic library may be able to borrow directly from that library through the CAVAL or ULANZ borrowing programs. You will need to register as a CAVAL or ULANZ borrower from the service desk of that library in order to borrow (they may charge a fee for registration).

For more information, such as which academic libraries participate in the borrowing programs, see Borrow at other academic libraries.

You can return borrowed Library items to any LTU campus library by dropping the items in the returns chute.

You can also post items back to the Library, but please allow time for them to arrive by their due date.

For more information, see Borrow from the Library: How to return items.

If you have returned an item to the Library but it is still showing as borrowed in your Library account, please let us know using the Library contact form.

When filling out the form, make sure to include the item's title, the date that you returned it and which campus library it was returned to.

Library staff will mark the item as 'claimed returned' and search for it within our collections. It is recommended that you have another search of your home/work/car to make sure the item wasn't misplaced.

You will be advised of the outcome of the Library's search and, if the item was not found, informed of the next steps to resolve the issue.

Note: The item will remain on your record until this issue has been resolved.
