History
The School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment, La Trobe University established the Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems on 13 July 2018 and builds on a long history of research under the previous name of The Murray–Darling Freshwater Research Centre.

The joint venture was dissolved in 2018 for administration purposes, with the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and La Trobe University continuing to collaborate, and La Trobe University establishing the Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems.
The Mildura laboratory, commonly known as the Lower Basin Laboratory, closed in December 2018.

2014
The Murray–Darling Basin Authority withdrew from the unincorporated joint venture and signed a Collaboration Agreement on behalf of the Joint Government.

The Murray–Darling Freshwater Research Centre was governed under a partnership between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) [external link], (Centre Agent) and the Murray–Darling Basin Commission, with the Lower Basin Laboratory relocating to the La Trobe University campus in Mildura in 2004 and the Northern Basin Laboratory in Goondiwindi closing in 2005.

The Murray–Darling Freshwater Research Centre became a member in the Cooperative Research Centre for Freshwater Ecology. In 1996 the Lower Basin Laboratory was established in Mildura and in 1999 the Northern Basin Laboratory at Goondiwindi.
