Professional background/experience

Lani Dumas is passionate about improving the student experience at La Trobe. He has a background in project management, stakeholder engagement, and campaign strategy, and is currently studying a master’s in International Development.

As President and Vice President of the La Trobe International Relations Association (LIRA), Lani revitalized the club, increasing student engagement and organizing high-profile events with MPs, lawyers, and academics. His leadership made LIRA one of the most active clubs at La Trobe, even during the challenges of COVID-19.

In his role as Welfare/Vice President of the La Trobe Student Union (LTSU), Lani led welfare programs, coordinated volunteers, and worked with media and political stakeholders on student advocacy. Key achievements included saving the Union from bankruptcy, returning $1 million in parking permits to students, abolishing lockout fees, extending library hours, and launching the 2023 foodbank, which provided 2,821 kg of food to 150 students weekly.

Currently, Lani works in the union industry, focusing on mobilizing workers, negotiating fairer conditions, and strengthening relationships with members. His experience across academic and professional settings highlights his dedication to collaboration and improving outcomes for students and La Trobe alike.
