Frequently asked questions
If you are applying for an undergraduate degree at La Trobe University (such as a Bachelor's degree), you may only submit a direct application if you satisfy the following conditions.
- You are not currently a year 12 student
- You are only applying at La Trobe University
- You are only applying for one course
If you are a current year 12 student, or if you are applying for multiple courses or institutions, you will need to apply via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) or the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) (depending on the campus you are applying for). Furthermore, you cannot submit a direct application if you have already applied via VTAC or UAC for the same intake.
This rule excludes La Trobe courses which are not available on VTAC or UAC (such as our regional diplomas).
Direct applications can be submitted online.
As a non-year 12 applicant, the primary consideration in your application will be one of the following:
- Previous tertiary results
- Previous TAFE results
- Previous work or life experience
Additional considerations for non-year 12 applicants can refer to performance on the STAT, study prior to your most recent academic study (e.g. year 12 results), professional experience, etc. Factors typically applicable to year 12 applicants including SEAS may also be considered for non-year 12 applicants.
Many La Trobe courses are available part-time. This means you study fewer subjects than in a full-time load, and take longer to complete your course. In many cases you can start a course part-time and move to full-time study later, or vice versa.
You can find out if your course offers part-time study in the course page via Find a course - Duration - (e.g. 3 years full-time or part-time equivalent) and/or the VTAC Guide.
It is important to note that classes for part-time students aren't always offered in the evening or outside normal business hours. Class times for subjects can be viewed by the online timetable
Part-time and full-time study modes can differ between organisations. For example, a full-time course load with the University may not mean a full-time course load for organisations such as Centrelink. For advice on Centrelink matters contact your nearest Centrelink Office or the Students website.
If you have received an offer into a course at La Trobe and have previously completed TAFE (diploma or higher) and/or tertiary study, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit).
If you have not yet received an offer to study at La Trobe, we cannot definitively determine how much advanced standing you would be eligible for. However, you can estimate how much credit you may receive by comparing the similarities between previous subjects you have completed and the subjects available in your course of interest.
Applying for credit
If you are studying, or thinking about studies at TAFE please check the Diploma or TAFE Pathway website. Here you will find information about the credit you will receive if your application is successful.
Many of our degrees offer industry experience in the form of clinical placements, internships, industry projects or voluntary work.
In some courses, such as teaching and most health sciences courses, gaining practical experience in the field is an essential part of the course. In other degrees, you can choose to get industry experience through optional units of study. Check out our course information to see what's on offer in the course you're most interested in.
By the way, once you're enrolled, our Career and Development Centre can help you find a job while you're studying, and can help you prepare for your dream job on graduation.
