La Trobe Asia Visiting Fellow Grants
From 2016 - 2020 the La Trobe Asia Visiting Fellow Grant Program awarded grants of up to $10,000 to enable leading Asia-based researchers funds to travel to La Trobe University for an extended period of time to work with staff and students on high quality research outputs, strengthen institutional research partnerships and foster research engagement with dynamic Asia-based research institutions.
Unfortunately the grant program ended at the end of 2020, however a list of all grant recipients and their projects are listed below for your interest and information.
2020
School of Humanities and Social Sciences (ASSC)
Dr Mark Civitella, Lecturer in Journalism at La Trobe University's Department of Politics, Media and Philosophy, was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Dr James Gomez, Director, Asia Centre (Bangkok and Jakarta) to La Trobe in February/March 2020.
Project title: Freedom of Expression in Southeast Asia - impacts of Fake News and Hate Speech
School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (SHE)
Dr Hossam Aboel Naga, Head of Department - Engineering at La Trobe University was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor Chai Jinchun, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Saga University, Japan to La Trobe for the first two week block in March and the second two week block in October 2020.
Project title: Electro-osmosis Induced vacuum consolidation of Coal Tailings
School of Humanities and Social Sciences (ASSC)
Professor Marija Tabain, and Emeritus Professor David Bradley, both professors of Linguistics at La Trobe University's Department of Languages and Linguistics, were successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor Hu Suhua, Professor, Academy for Chinese Ethnic Minority Languages at Minzu University, China to La Trobe for four weeks in November 2020.

School of Humanities and Social Sciences (ASSC)
Dr Kiran Shinde, Senior Lecturer in Community Planning and Development at La Trobe University's Department of Social Enquiry, was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor Uptal Sharma, Director of the Institute of Architecture and Planning at Nirma University, India, to La Trobe University in August/September 2019.
Research theme: Vulnerable heritage and risky development: Examining the UNESCO World Heritage Living City of Ahmedabad, India.
School of Humanities and Social Sciences (ASSC)
Associate Professor James Leibold (Head of Department, Politics, Media and Philosophy), Dr Ruth Gamble (David Myers Research Fellow, College PVC) and Dr Alex Davis (New Generation Network Scholar, College PVC) were successful in obtaining a grant to bring Dr Sonika Gupta, Associate Professor in Global Politics and Chinese Studies, at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Dehli, India, in June/July 2019.
Research theme: Democratization of Tibetan Exile Politics: Institutions and Processes and Environment, development and citizenship in the Himalaya.

Associate Professor Adam Bourne, Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health & Society (ARCSHS) at La Trobe University was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Dr Sin How Lim, Centre of Excellence for Research (CERiA) and the Social & Preventive Medicine (SPM) Department, University of Malaya, Malaysia to La Trobe University in 2018.
Research theme: Drug use and sexual risk behaviour among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Malaysia and Australia.
School of Engineering and Mathematics (SHE)
Dr Simon Egerton, Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, Bendigo was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor Naoyuki Kubota, Department of System Design, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan to La Trobe University in August/September 2018.
Research theme: Robot Partners for Community Centric Care Systems within Informationally Structured Spaces
School of Molecular Sciences (SHE)
Dr Dongchen Qi, Associate Professor Paul Pigram, Professor Chris Pakes and Emeritus Professor John Riley, Department of Chemistry and Physics, La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science were successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor Andrew Wee, Department of Physics, National University of Singapore, Singapore and Professor Atsushi Fujimori, Department of Physics, University of Tokyo, Japan to La Trobe University. Professor Wee will visit in May 2018 and Professor Fujimori will visit in August/September 2018.
Research theme: Engineering Ferromagnetism in Two-Dimensional Materials

Dr Keir Strickland, Department of Archaeology & History, was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor K. Krishnan, Dean, Faculty of Arts, MS University Baroda, India to La Trobe University in April/May of 2018.

Associate Professor Emiko Kashima, School of Psychology and Public Health, was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor Shihui Han, the Director of Culture and Social Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at Peking University, PRC, to La Trobe University in June.
Research theme: Examining modulations of racial ingroup bias in empathic responses to dynamic pain expressions with Chinese and Australian participants.
School of Languages and Linguistics (ASSC)
Dr Ian Woolford, Lecturer in Hindi Language, was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor Abdul Bismallah, Department of Hindi, Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi) to La Trobe University in the first semester of 2017.
Research themes: “Marginalization and Recovery of Folksong in Hindi Fiction”: A jointly-authored article on Prof. Bismillah’s relationship with the performance traditions in North India, for publication in an academic journal such as Asian Music or South Asian Studies.
School of Life Sciences (SHE)
Professor Jim Whelan, AgriBio, the Centre for AgriBioscience, was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Professor Huixia Shou (College of Life Science, Zhejiang University) to La Trobe University in September/October 2017.
Research themes: Testing 300 ecotypes in the model system Arabidopsis thaliana for differential responses to plants nutrients and examine the feasibility of testing outcomes in rice.
School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (SHE)
Associate Professor Tomasz Kowalski, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, was successful in obtaining a grant to bring Emeritus Professor Hiroakira Ono, Japan Institute of Science and Tech- nology (JAIST), Ishikawa, Japan, to La Trobe University.
Research themes: Semantic methods for establishing the analytic cut property.

Research Themes: Work on integrable discrete dynamical systems; discrete integrable systems to boundary value problems of practical interest in heat and mass flow; the ability to construct new solutions of the differential equations for scale-invariant curvature-driven evolving curves and scrolls
