Year 11 Students

In Year 10 you would have thought about the subjects you wanted to study in VCE. You may have chosen specific subjects to meet the prerequisite requirements of some tertiary courses, with a clear idea of what you want to study, or you may still be thinking in very broad terms. Year 11 is a time to think a little more carefully about your initial choices and do a bit more research. Remember that having a range of well researched options for study beyond Year 12 may help keep you motivated and organised in your final year of secondary school.

What should I be doing in Year 11?

Year 11 is a great time to start researching the courses and universities that you are thinking about applying to.

Make time to go out and visit universities, either on your own or by attending an Open Day during July and August. Open Days are great opportunities to speak with course advisers and current students to find out what it would really be like to be a student there. Make sure you have a look at a variety of institutions to see what would suit you best.

La Trobe University holds a variety of events throughout the year to give you a taste of university life - come and join us; parents are also invited to most activities.

Your school's Careers Advisers are a great resource when it comes to searching for course information, and they may help you feel more confident about your course selections for 2009.

How do I choose a course?

Use CourseFinder to find information about courses. You can search by subject area or by career.

Work experience is also helpful - it allows you to find out what a particular job really involves. La Trobe University offers work experience places throughout the year in a number of different departments. This is a great chance to experience life on a University campus, as well as pick up some valuable skills. See our work experience program for details.

Speak to people who may be in jobs you want to do, find out what course they did, how they feel about their job, etc. Attend careers fairs in your area. Introduce yourself to employers, ask questions about the type of people they hire, and the qualifications and skills they're looking for.

What courses are available?

La Trobe offers over 250 undergraduate courses in a wide variety of areas across five Faculties and seven campuses around Victoria. Use CourseFinder to give you an idea of what you can study and where.
