Fees and scholarships

Fees

Fees for postgraduate study are largely dependent on the course in which you enrol. Most postgraduate courses have course-based tuition fees. Tuition fees are listed per Equivalent Full-Time Student Load (EFTSL) – if you take more or less than a full-time load your tuition fees will change accordingly. Indicative fees are provided in the course description (search Find a Course for course descriptions). The course description will also state whether Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are available for the course.

Postgraduate research

If you are enrolled in a research degree (and are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident) you will not pay tuition fees.

Research candidature is funded by the Commonwealth Government via the Research Training Scheme (RTS). (Please note fees may apply to coursework components of some Professional Doctorates).

Postgraduate coursework

Postgraduate coursework programs are either fee paying, known as an Australian fee-place, or subsidised by the Commonwealth Government, known as a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP).

Australian fee-place

In Australian-fee paying courses students pay the full cost of the course. See how much your course will cost in 2012.

Australian fee-paying students may be eligible to take out a government loan (FEE-HELP) to assist with paying course fees.

To be eligible for FEE-HELP loans, you must be either:

  • an Australian citizen
  • the holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa*
  • the holder of an Australian permanent visa who is undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals*.

* You must also reside in Australia for the duration of your study.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)

If you are offered a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), the Australian Government subsidies your tuition fees meaning you only pay a proportion of the overall cost of your course. See how much your student contribution will be in 2012.

If you are an Australian citizen or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa, you have the choice of three options for paying your student contribution. You can defer your contribution and pay it back through a HECS-HELP loan (which you pay back through tax deductions, when your income reaches a certain level).

Alternatively, you can choose to pay for your course upfront at the start of each semester and receive a 20 per cent discount. You can also choose to pay some of your course upfront and take a HECS-HELP loan for the remainder. Payments you make over $500 will receive a 20 per cent discount.
