Philosophy
Welcome to Philosophy at La Trobe
Philosophy was one of the foundation disciplines taught and researched at La Trobe from the University’s opening in 1967. The foundation professor was Brian Ellis, and later a second professor, H. J. McCloskey, was appointed. Many of Australia’s best-known philosophers have held posts at La Trobe – John Bigelow, Frank Jackson, Robert Pargetter, Peter Singer, Jack Smart, to name just a few.
Research
Philosophy at La Trobe is pluralist, with some staff and postgrads working in the analytic or Anglo-American tradition, while others are located in the European tradition. Students can take a PhD in a specialist area, for example environmental ethics, critical whiteness studies, paradox or metaethics, or in a range of other fields where the staff have research strengths. Philosophy is available at the Bundoora and Albury/Wodonga campuses. The on-line critical thinking unit, PHI1CRT is available at all campuses.
