Events and Culture

Events and Entertainment At La Trobe, study is only part of the experience.

As a member of our diverse community, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for new experiences and meeting new people. Just some of these include:

Faculty and club events

La Trobe's faculties and clubs run a wide range of events throughout the year including formal balls, film screenings, talks and gatherings. Visit the La Trobe Student Union to find out about student group events, and don't forget to check our events calendar.

Flash Mob fever hits La Trobe University

Galleries and cultural sponsorship programs

The La Trobe University Museum of Art, Phyllis Palmer Gallery and the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre are cultural hubs that provide exhibition space as well as permanent collections and education programs.

La Trobe also supports the Bundoora Homestead Art Centre and is a major sponsor of the Bendigo Art Gallery – one of Australia’s oldest and largest regional art galleries.

Along with these, the University supports the SheppARTon Festival – a diverse art festival held throughout Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley region over the Labour Day long weekend.

Equality and Diversity programs

La Trobe’s Equality and Diversity Centre is focused on improving access for students and supporting the successful completion of their studies. The Centre’s activities include disability support services and working to remove barriers to university access for disadvantaged students.

Indigenous cultural programs and events

The Office of the Director, Indigenous Education runs various events at our campuses including Harmony Day, Sorry Day and NAIDOC. We also host the Hyllus Maris Annual Memorial Lecture at our Melbourne campus – the first memorial lecture in honour of an Aboriginal woman on an Australian university campus.

Music, theatre and film

The National Campus Band Competition – the biggest student band competition of its type in the world – is held at our Bendigo campus. Previous winners and entrants have included Eskimo Joe, The Vines, Jebediah, George, 78 Saab, Augie March and The Vasco Era. For further information email La Trobe Student Union reception (ltsu.reception@latrobe.edu.au).

You can also check out one of the many events run by student film and theatre or better still get involved by acting, writing, directing or just helping out. It’s a great way to get to know other students.

Orientation activities

Orientation Week activities are held at all campuses at the start of each year. These programs help you prepare for your time at university and are a great opportunity to make new friends and have fun! We also run a Welcome Festival specifically for international students.

Breakfast and BBQs

La Trobe wouldn’t be a truly Australian university without the traditional free feed! Most of our campuses have student barbecues and free breakfasts throughout the year.
