Short programs

Other overseas opportunities

La Trobe University students have the option of participating in various Short Programs. There are four types of short programs:

  1. Clinical placements
  2. Short term programs
  3. Volunteering opportunities
  4. Internships

Short programs are not only a great way of spending the break from university, but also gaining an overseas experience without disrupting a current course structure. Depending on the kind of program, credits for units can also be obtained by participating in a Short Program.

Costs will vary from program to program.

Students can apply for a Mobility Grant, but the outcome is not guaranteed. The amount of the grant can only be finalised closer to the date of the program.

Updates on current programs can be obtained by becoming a member of our Facebook group (La Trobe Study Abroad and Exchange) or by referring to this website on a regular basis.

Clinical Placements

Students whose degree entails a practicum or clinical placement may be able to do this overseas. Students can source these placements themselves, through the faculty or refer to the opportunities available at La Trobe International.

To apply for funding, students must complete the Clinical Placement Application (PDF 50KB). All applications must be accompanied by written permission from the student's faculty including evidence that the placement will earn credit towards the student's La Trobe degree.

Short Term Programs/Independent Programs

There are different types of Short Term Programs available to LTU students:
a.    Faculty led Short Term Programs*
b.    Programs facilitated by LTI with a La Trobe partner institution
c.    Independent Programs

Faculty Led Short Term Programs

Each year La Trobe faculties and schools facilitate a number of short term programs and study tours. These programs may be led by a La Trobe academic or arranged by the faculty in coordination with an affiliated international institution.

As these may change each year please contact your faculty or/and school office for more information on how to apply.

Programs commonly run during the winter or/and summer break, it is advisable to contact your faculty at the beginning of semester to ensure that you do not miss out on any of these opportunities.

Students interested in Short Term Programs must complete the Short Program Application Form.

Please note: all short program application forms must be submitted to the Global Lounge 4-6 weeks before departure.

Programs facilitated by LTI with a La Trobe partner institution

As part of these programs, students can spend their summer or winter breaks overseas, enrolled in a unit at another institution and may receive credit towards their LTU degree.

Students interested in Short Term Programs facilitated by LTI must complete the  Short Program Application Form (PDF 72KB). If students are receiving credit for the program towards their LTU degree, the application must include written approval from the appropriate faculty (page 2 of application) and returned to an Education Abroad Advisor at La Trobe International with the required supporting documents.

If students are not receiving credit for the program towards their LTU degree, only page 1 and page 3 of the application form must be completed and returned to LTI along with the supporting documents.

Please note: should you wish to apply to participate in a short term program which is hosted by a La Trobe University partner institution you must have a minimum weighted average of 65 per cent and must submit an official academic transcript with your application.

It takes approximately three weeks to assess applications. Successful students will then be assisted with their host university application process.

Internships*

La Trobe Abroad is excited to highlight an opportunity for you to apply for an internship in either San Francisco or Toronto.

These internship programs are run through the Academic Internship Council (AIC) and are a fantastic way for La Trobe students to develop their professional skills and gain valuable experience in their fields, not to mention gaining a global perspective of their industry. Internships are available in a variety of industry sectors, including allied health (public health), education, business, finance, law, politics, journalism, art and communications to name a few.

These programs go for 6 weeks around 15 January to 25 February 2012.

Program services:

  • Individual career assessment meetings via Skype and pre-departure orientation webinar
  • Accommodation for the duration of the internship
  • Placement in a professional practice internship via personalized process, and follow-up including any required trouble-shooting, and coordination with the internship supervisor
  • On-site orientation in Toronto or San Francisco
  • Mid-term review and final evaluation
  • Workshop or materials on topics such as interviewing skills and resume preparation
  • Professional development components such as mid-term networking symposium and communities of practice small groups
  • Cultural exploration activities
  • For United States: J-1 visa internship services for each student, including paperwork processing and placement monitoring as well as SEVIS Fee and required basic health insurance coverage (equivalent visa services for Canada will be provided as well)

Approximately total per student costs:
Toronto - $4820 USD
San Francisco - $5230 USD

Although not all students will be able to gain credit towards their La Trobe degrees, La Trobe Abroad appreciates that this is a valuable experience for any student, not to mention the value it adds to a CV. La Trobe Abroad will therefore be awarding a La Trobe Mobility Grant to the value of AUD $1000 to any student that is accepted into an AIC program, even if they are not receiving credit towards their LTU degree.

La Trobe Abroad is dedicated to giving students a cultural experience related to their studies and we think this is a fantastic opportunity for our students to become involved in.

Students who will receive credit for this program will also be eligible for an OS-HELP Loan.

We will be looking at having a webinar with AIC at some stage around 9 August.  Details to be confirmed.

Both the La Trobe and AIC applications are due by the Friday 19 August. (Details about the AIC application documents to be confirmed.)

For more information about AIC and their programs, please see academicinternshipcouncil.org (only Toronto and San Francisco are available to La Trobe students).

Ecuador

Universidad Espiritu Santo' also offers various internship opportunities which may be taken for credit while on Exchange to Universidad Espiritu Santo. There are a variety of these organisations that deal with a whole range of issues and disciplines that interns may apply for, for more information please see the Serve and Learn Spanish in Ecuador website or visit the Global Lounge in Upper Agora West.

*Internships are available, but managed, allocated and, guaranteed on a case by case basis.

Volunteering opportunities

La Trobe students have the opportunity to make a difference and contribute to the global society by participating in a Volunteering Program.

As volunteers, students can work towards making a positive contribution towards society, but can also grow as individuals themselves. Volunteering is also a great way of learning more about the functioning and sustainability of a non-profit organisation.

We currently have an opportunity in Ecuador, please read below for more information:

Hogar de Cristo is a Latin American NGO that has been supplying low-cost housing to the poor in the outskirts of Guayaquil (Ecuador) for years. The Universidad Espiritu Santo is giving students the opportunity to join their volunteer program with Hogar de Cristo, they encourage students to not only participate in the building of the homes, but also in fundraising (usually around $100-$150) but any amount is good.

Please speak with an Education Abroad Advisor at the Global Lounge for more information or visit the Serve and Learn Spanish in Ecuador website.

To apply for funding, students must complete the Short Program Application Form (70KB) and return to an Education Abroad Advisor at the Global Lounge.
