La Trobe student Abdulkarim Almumtin

Abdulkarim Almumtin arrived at La Trobe in March 2009, when he started an English preparatory course at La Trobe's International College. His enthusiasm for the place, for the university and his studies is infectious. He makes it sound like so much fun you’ll want to go back to uni!

He completed an intermediate nursing diploma in Saudi Arabia and worked as a registered nurse there for four years in one of the largest hospitals. Thanks to his skills and his dedication, he was sponsored to continue his studies at La Trobe University with a Bachelor of Nursing.

‘La Trobe has a good track record in health sciences and excellent study resources. That is essential to help me achieve my academic goals and motivate me to learn more,’ says Abdulkarim.

The course offers Abdulkarim the opportunity to practice his skills in general and specialist hospitals, community health centres and extended care facilities, which gives him a broader understanding of the field.

‘The thing that I like most in my course is the placements which allow me to practice helping, treating and even saving people’s lives,’ adds Abdulkarim.

And to justify his true calling, Abdulkarim’s favourite thing about Melbourne is people, whom he describes as cosmopolitan, fun-loving and friendly.

‘Everyone is so helpful, which makes it so easy for students to settle in as international students. I really value  Melbourne’s multicultural aspect, which has created a landscape of ideas, skills and personalities.’

Adbdulkarim will stay in Australia until the end of his degree, during which he hopes to absorb as many skills and as much information as possible to help him progress his nursing career in Saudi Arabia.
