From Russia to Australia (Issue 7, 2009)

La Trobe international student Nadia Matveeva
Nadia Matveeva is from a city called Samara in Russia and she has been living in Australia for more than two years. Initially, Nadia came to Sydney to improve her English and she was planning to complete her Master's course in the United Kingdom. However, Australia made such a strong impression on her that she decided she would like to continue her studies here.
After thorough research, Nadia decided the most suitable course choice for her was the La Trobe Master of Accounting and Financial Management at La Trobe University, in Melbourne.
‘My undergraduate degree was in law and the Master’s program at La Trobe included a preparation unit for students that didn’t have an accounting background.’
Since starting her course at La Trobe, Nadia has made many friends, especially after living on campus in her first semester.
‘My friends at La Trobe are the highlight of my time here. When I came here, I felt like I fitted in right away. Living close to people from so many different cultures has been a new experience for me, but I am enjoying it very much. I have friends from all over the world now and I feel I became more open-minded and a better person for that.’
Nadia is planning to return to Russia upon finishing her studies at La Trobe to find employment.
‘I think studying international accounting will help me with the changing business climate in Russia.’
In the meantime Nadia is enjoying her experience here and spending time with her friends.
