The International College soccer team

Soccer has always been a popular sport at La Trobe's International College. The students there find that this is one of the first things they have in common. South American, Middle Eastern, European or Asian students all get together over a game of soccer.

Although they do it for fun and to remind themselves of home, they are also very competitive. The latest competition they entered was the 2009 Annual University Pathways Cup. The team managed a terrific performance reaching the semi-finals without losing a game.

The 2009 Soccer Pathways Cup comprised of eight different teams from Victoria, each representing their international college: Swinburne, Holmesglen, RMIT, Taylors, Gurkhas Institute, MIBT and Monash, who was also the host of the event.

The La Trobe International College team defeated the Monash College, the Gurkhas Institute and MIBT, but the toughest game proved to be against RMIT. The match ended in 0-0 and was extended to penalties, which saw the team finally lose by only one goal.

‘The competition overall was a huge success and despite our loss, the La Trobe team kept their heads high and are eager to come back and win next year,’ says team manager Julian Lyon.

It was a fantastic team effort from the fifteen players and their coach Thanh Nguyen, who all look forward to repeating last year’s performance, when they won the cup.
