On Saturday, 14 March, the Indonesian Students Association of Victoria hosted the 2009 Alun-alun Festival to welcome new Indonesian students to Melbourne.

Hosted at the Indonesian General Consulate of Melbourne, the festival is an annual event which aims to greet all Indonesian students and to help them socialise with students from other universities. All Indonesian students associations in Victoria were invited to participate and promote their programs to the newly arrived.

This year's event began after lunch and it incorporated workshops about life in Australia, accommodation, culture shock, and other topics relevant to students commencing their study in Australia.

'I enjoyed the event because it gave me the chance to meet my friends from other universities and to make new friends. It was a great opportunity to socialise and to make new students aware of the Indonesian Students Association at La Trobe' said Adi Witono Waluyo, who is completing a Master of Adult Education at
La Trobe and is also a member of the La Trobe Indonesian Students Association.

The event concluded with an afternoon 'ngariung' (socialising or gathering), which allowed guests to socialise, enjoy music, eat traditional Indonesian food and participate in quizzes to win prizes.
