BUSINESS PRINCIPLES IN HEALTH MANAGEMENT

This La Trobe University/AMA Victoria program has been developed specifically for the needs of the medical profession, this course is a must for medical practitioners who desire critical success in the challenging and increasingly competitive medical business environment, an environment which is changing at an ever increasing rate.

Business Principles of Health Management provides a solid foundation in the key business disciplines and to reflect the breadth of issues that arise in the strategic management and development of a medical practice. The course, which is delivered over two weekends (32 hours) addresses the major issues in business that face today's medical practitioners. A high contact teaching approach provides a stimulating, interactive and supportive learning environment that presents attendees with the opportunity to develop their business, leadership, creative and teamwork skills. Almost every day in every organisation we measure, report, analyse, forecast and project on every key facet of business operations except for one – our Human Capital. While CEO's can readily access performance data in key areas such as revenue, forward orders, production, quality, market share and inventory, very little if anything is regularly provided in relation to workforce management.

In an operating environment where labour costs constitute one of the largest annual expenditures incurred, why is that we struggle to effectively measure and report on our workforce too?

If we accept that clear linkages exist between workforce performance and quality, productivity, customer service, innovation and new product development/release, (to name just a few), surely it makes sense that we develop, implement and maintain integrated Human Capital Metrics suitable to the specific needs of our organisation?

If this is not sufficiently compelling on its own, let us consider what lies ahead of us in relation to baby-boomer retirements, an ageing workforce, a shrinking labour pool and the emergence of third world economies that are hungry for qualified and experienced employees. 2005 - 5th Annual HR Conference, 'Maximising People Performance to Achieve Business Success and Sustainability'

The Graduate School of Management in association with Optimum performance offered the 2005 HR conference for HR practitioners wanting to identify explore best practices in human resource management, specifically in the area of People Performance and how that translates into Business Success and Sustainability.

The Conference covered a range of presentations focused upon the latest research, innovation, concepts and practical case-studies in relation to Maximising People Performance ' in organisations large and small. Speakers included pre-eminent academics, specialist consultants and senior Human Resources professionals from the private and public sectors such as Michael O'Shaughnessy, Director HR Global Design International Human Resources Department, McDonalds Corporation, Chicago USA and Paul C Birch, Executive Director, Human Resources Siemans.

2005 - Transforming Human Resources 'From Administrative Support to Business Partnership'  

2005 Skills Development Program

In today's competitive and challenging business environment CEO's are increasingly demanding that the Human Resources team gets out from “behind the desk” into the development and implementation of programs and services that optimise workforce performance and contribute to the achievement of business objectives.

To assist HR professionals in successfully making this transformation, we developed three integrated workshops that built on the skills, understanding and capability in critical areas for success. Mongolian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Improving the methodology of performance evaluation of human resources of the Mongolian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

VIETNAM PARTY COMMITTEE: Short Course Training Program in International Business and Leadership

Duration: September - November 2006

This Program provided Party Committee members with an understanding of current business skills and knowledge, and the importance of managing businesses in a changing environment. The focus of this program was on International Business and Leadership, where case studies were used and Industry Visits conducted in the delivery of the modules. The range of topics was comprehensive and the focus of the course on the practical use and application of the material covered, designed to give participants an understanding of the realities as well the theory.

HO CHI MINH TELEVISION STATION - Human Resources Management Training

Duration: December 2004 and March 2006
Partner: Ho Chi Minh Television Station

This program has been run twice – each for five days and was attended by 25 staff members from Ho Chi Minh Television Station. The aim of the course was provide participants with skills in and understanding of Human Resources Management (HRM).

The overall aim of the course was to introduce participants to the theory and practice of strategic human resource management. It included the major aspects of human resource practice and aimed to develop knowledge, skills and judgement in the people management area including performance and retention of staff. The teaching was delivered with a mix of lectures, interactive case studies, group discussions, and problem solving exercises. We also made use of outside visits to companies and invited guest lecturers from relevant fields.

Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College - Centre for Management Studies (SBMJC - CMS) - Global Management Challenge

Duration: 1-7 February and 10-16 February 2006

The study tour was designed for 100 students from SBMJC- CMS to attend a 6 day study tour program, while remaining in Australia for 6 days. The program was delivered by senior professors and lecturers of the Graduate School of Management, La Trobe University.

The study tour was divided in two groups of 50 students, and ran in two sessions, from 1-7 February and 10-16 February 2006. The theme for the study tour was "The global management challenge", which showcased the GSM's through a week-long agenda of academic and recreational sessions. A number of speakers from the fields of marketing, strategy, HR and international business were invited to deliver the 6-day program. There were also a number of recreational activities planned along with the academic sessions.

This Program provides Collingwood managers, members and business associates with an understanding of current business skills and knowledge, and their importance in managing businesses in a changing environment. The focus of this program is in sport management and case studies from the sport industry are used extensively in the delivery of the modules in this program. The program is structured to address the most common areas of activity in business where, irrespective of the level at which an employee is working, there is every likelihood that person will need to understand what constitutes sound business practice. The range of topics is comprehensive and the focus of the course is on the practical use and application of the material covered. HEBEI ACCOUNTING GROUP: Accounting: Management, Education and Assessment in Australia

Duration: October 2004

The program titled ‘Accounting: Management, Education and Assessment in Australia ' was delivered to the Hebei Accounting Group. The Group comprised of high ranking representatives from the various levels of government in Hebei Province , China . The program was conducted over one week and the topics covered in both seminars and workshops include:

  • The accounting management environment in Australia ;
  • Finance and taxation in Australia ;
  • National and local regulations of accounting employment in Australia ;
  • Examinations required for accounting qualifications;
  • Assessment and employment of accountants in Australia ;

QINGDAO MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT PUBLIC ADMINSTRATION PROGRAM

Duration: November 2003
Partner: Qingdao Municipal Government

This program ran for 18 days in Australia , with 15 days of training and was attended by 31 senior managers from the Qingdao Municipal Government. The Qingdao Government has successfully bid to host the yachting events as part of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The course content and teaching method was tailored to mix formal lectures with industry site visits, these focusing on major sporting venues and activities in Melbourne . The students were all senior managers in the public sector who were facing significant challenges due to China 's entry into the world market and the need to offer world class facilities for the 2008 Olympics.

The overall aim of this course was to introduce participants to the theory and practice of public administration. It included the major aspects of the functions of Government and macro-management; human resource management and development in the public sector; Government policies to promote economic and social development. The teaching was delivered with a mix of lectures, interactive case studies, group discussions, and problem solving exercises.

As part of the program, the senior managers visited and met with officials from the Melbourne Tennis Centre; the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit; Yachting Victoria; the Melbourne Cricket Ground; the Department of Tourism, Sport and Commonwealth Games; the Banyule City Council; the Australian Stock Exchange; and the Australian Trade Commission.

PROVISION MANAGEMENT EDUCATION SERIES

Duration: 2002 - 2006

ProVision is an umbrella professional organisation for optometrists throughout Australia , and has some 350 members. Largely these members are small business employing between 5 and 15 staff. While highly qualified as health specialists, members have limited formal business education. The Management Education Series was introduced to ProVision members in 2001, with 150 participants Australia wide. The Series was designed to focus on the business needs of small business. Over a period of 30 months participants completed all 10 modules of the program, and if desired complete assessments which will led to credit towards La Trobe's Graduate Certificate of Business Administration. Every module was presented as a two-day weekend workshop, with extensive course notes, lunches and breaks. The Graduate School of Management provided a 10 module Management Education Series focusing on:

The optometrist as a people manager (3 modules);

The optometrist as a marketer (2 modules);

The optometrist as a business planner (3 modules);

The optometrist as a leader (2 modules).

Hanoi Post and Telecommunication - Human Resource Management Training

Duration: November 2002
Partner: Hanoi Post and Telecommunication

This program ran for 30 days in Australia , with 20 days of training and was attended by 12 senior managers from HNPT. The course content and teaching method drew upon our experience in teaching human resource management to Chinese MBA students both in Australia and in China . These students were mostly senior and middle managers in a range of industries including telecommunications who were facing significant human resource challenges due to China 's entry into the world market. Increasing productivity and improving skill levels through training and development initiatives, better labour utilisation and staff motivation were particular issues in the Chinese business environment. We believe that Viet Nam faces similar challenges and have woven these themes into the program.

The overall aim of the course was to introduce participants to the theory and practice of strategic human resource management. It included the major aspects of human resource practice and aimed to develop knowledge, skills and judgement in the people management area. The teaching was delivered with a mix of lectures, interactive case studies, group discussions, and problem solving exercises. Outside visits to companies and invited guest lecturers from relevant fields.

Hanoi Post and Telecommunication - Financial & Accounting Management Training

Duration: November 2001
Partnership: Hanoi Post and Telecommunication

The program ran for 30 days in Australia , with 20 days of training and was attended by 15 senior managers from HPT. The course gave an oversight to some of the major quantitative modelling tools that have been successful in the business environment, in particular finance. The tools offered provided a logical structure for understanding problems and introduced mathematical techniques (including software packages) for problem solving. The objective was to provide knowledge of the variety of tools available to measure and improve financial performance. Topics included: Asset management; Analysis of financial reports; Accounting in business administration; Financial management of projects. A significant part of the course design was the visit of the group to local post and telecommunication companies.

In both the accounting and finance components, the various cases used for assessment were well received and well understood by the class. This approach was useful in gauging the trainees' technical knowledge in the discipline and was a considerable assistance in providing a process of continuous assessment, given the time constraint and language barrier.

Throughout the program, trainees were exposed to a wide range of Australian accounting and financial management practices and accordingly acquired a good understanding of the functions and processes of the profession. The program also introduced trainees to contemporary financial management best practices in risk management and financial modelling, which allowed them to apply these new tools in their management functions.
