Course description

This is an advanced professional qualification designed to equip LOTE teachers with the skills required to teach AUSLAN in a variety of contexts. Students also analyse the learning abilities and needs of their students within the framework of sign language teaching. Students are required to participate in observation and practical experience in teaching AUSLAN as a language other than English.

Course structure

Students are required to complete 120 credit points of subject. This course aims to introduce students to some of the key issues in establishing bilingual education for deaf students. Students are expected to be fluent or acquire fluency in both English (reading and writing) and Auslan by the completion of the course. Subjects include literacy and numeracy development for deaf and hearing impaired students and curriculum issues in the development of bilingual, bicultural teaching programs.

Annual (or Total) Tuition Fee (AUD)

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or

Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe Melbournee; or

Approved equivalent.

Academic entry requirements

Applicants should have a recognised teaching qualification of at least three years' duration with either a four-year sequence of sign language graduating at advanced level, or native-speaker background.
