Course description
This course leads to qualification for the speciality practice of maternal and child health nursing. The program aims to prepare nurses for a broad community approach to nursing children and families, particularly for families with children in the prenatal to school-entry stage. The course includes workshops, tutorials and a minimum clinical requirement.

Course structure
Students undertake five subjects - two 30-credit-point subjects and three 20-credit-point subjects. There are no electives offered. Clinical placement is undertaken in a range of community venues that support families with young children, including maternal and child health centres.

Students are required to obtain police checks, working with children checks and possibly immunisations prior to commencing clinical placements.
Prerequisites
Current registration with NMBA as a Divisional 1 Nurse and unrestricted midwifery and a minimum of one year’s recent clinical practice experience. The course is suitable for applicants whose midwifery training was hospital-based.

Semester 1 and 2 (March and July)
Additional information
Students must attend two three-day clinical workshops prior to the commencement of semester. Workshops are held at the Melbourne campus. Students must obtain a police check and Working With Children check before undertaking clinical professional placements.
