Course description
This course leads to a qualification for the specialty practice of maternal and child health nursing. The program aims to prepare nurses for a broad community approach to nursing children and families, particularly for families with children in the prenatal to school-entry stage. The course includes workshops, tutorials and a minimum clinical requirement. It equips students with the knowledge, skills and competencies for entry into child, family and community practice.

Course structure
The program includes workshops and tutorials and has a minimum clinical requirement. Students undertake two 30-credit-point subjects and three 20-credit-point subjects. There are no electives offered in this course. Clinical placement is undertaken in a range of community venues supporting families with young children, including Maternal and Child Health Centres. Places are dependent on the availability of suitable clinical placements.

Students are required to obtain police checks, working with children checks and possibly immunisations prior to commencing clinical placements.
Prerequisites
Postgraduate Diploma of Midwifery or equivalent with a B grade average grade or above, current registration as a Division 1 Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) or equivalent, unrestricted midwifery qualifications, and a minimum of one year's recent clinical practice experience.

Semester 1 and 2 (March and July)
Additional information
Students must attend two 3-day clinical workshops at the Melbourne campus prior to commencement. Students must also obtain a police check and Working With Children check before undertaking clinical professional placements. Students may require documentation of immunisation status prior to commencement of their placement.
Professional recognition
Graduates are qualified to practise in maternal and child health nursing.
