Course description

The course is designed to provide a range of opportunities for students to develop a deeper understanding of spinal cord injury nursing through systematic analysis and reflection on the relationships between theory and practice. NOTE: The course will only be conducted if sufficient enrolments are achieved.

Course structure

Exit options are available at two levels: Graduate Certificate (three core subjects) and Postgraduate Diploma (one core subject and two electives). The former enables students to specialise in spinal care nursing; the Postgraduate Diploma offers the option to specialise in a secondary area of interest. Applicants undertaking the Master of Nursing (Spinal Care) must complete 120 credit points (out of 180) at level 5; that comprise of either a group of subjects as a major stream of study, a clinical project or minor thesis.

Prerequisites

Registration as a Division 1 nurse and current practising certificate from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) or equivalent.

Additional information

Applicants must work at Austin Health or in a Spinal Care Unit at a hospital affiliated with La Trobe University. Face-to-face teaching occurs at the Austin Health Hospital, all other students are taught via distance education.
