Course description

This course aims to give students the in-depth knowledge and skills required to practise at an advanced nursing level and to provide professional leadership in contemporary clinical and professional nursing specialities. It is designed to build on the knowledge base and clinical judgement skills of specialist nurses.

The role of nurse practitioner places particular emphasis on the development of advanced clinical assessment skills relevant to the nurse's specialty, and development of a collaborative multidisciplinary approach to patient care. The program focuses on this using the ANMC NP competencies.

Course structure

The course integrates the relevant theory and practice to allow the student to develop clinically as well as developing leadership and research skills to demonstrate the effectiveness and benefits of the NP role.

Prerequisites

Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) or Postgraduate Diploma, or equivalent, and registration as a Division 1 nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Applicants must also be employed by an appropriate agency, and have at least five years' post-registration experience in their specialty. And they must provide evidence their employer will provide them with 450 hours of supervised clinical placement.

Career opportunities

Graduates are eligible to apply for endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner and to work as an endorsed NP.
