Course description

The course develops nurses' theoretical knowledge and practical skills in caring for patients with coronary artery disease. As well as examining the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease, it explores psychosocial, ethical and rehabilitative aspects. Speakers include specialist nursing and medical clinicians and there are practical skills workshops to cover technological aspects of cardiac nursing. There is a minimum clinical requirement, with study days held at the Alfred Hospital.

Course structure

Exit options are available at two levels: Graduate Certificate (three core subjects) and Postgraduate Diploma (one core subject and two electives). The former enables students to specialise in cardiac care nursing; the Postgraduate Diploma offers the option to specialise in a secondary area of interest. Applicants undertaking the Master of Nursing (Cardiac Care) must complete 120 credit points (out of 180) at level 5; that comprise of either a group of subject as a major stream of study, a clinical project or minor thesis.

Prerequisites

Registration as a Division 1 Nurse and current practising certificate with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) or equivalent.

Applicants must be employed by a hospital affiliated with La Trobe University. Face-to-face teaching is conducted at the Alfred Hospital.
