Course description

This course give graduates physiotherapists an opportunity to develop advanced clinical and practical skills in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Course structure

The program's first 60 credit points comprise the Graduate Certificate; the remaining 60 credit points comprise two subjects that teach advanced clinical practice and expert clinical reasoning, manual therapy and exercise prescription within an evidence-based practice framework. One subject comprises 160 hours of clinical placements, the other requires a two-week full-time attendance on campus for lectures and practical sessions.

Federal Police Check $15 to $43 and/or Working with Children Check $77 may be required.

Accommodation and travel costs for the two-week University-based Clinical Reasoning & Manual Physiotherapy PTY5CRM, and for clinical placement PTY5APM, may also be incurred and will vary according to venue.

Prerequisites

Graduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy with minimum B grade course weighted mean average, at least two years' clinical experience in the musculoskeletal field, and registration to practise as a physiotherapist in Australia.

Additional information

Students must complete the two-week University-based subject Clinical Reasoning and Manual Physiotherapy (PTY5CRM TE:PE W5-10, first two weeks of February) before commencing PTY5APM: Advanced Practice in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.

Career opportunities

Physiotherapists are employed in a wide variety of settings, including private practice, general hospitals, rehabilitation centres, community health centres, industrial clinics and specialist centres. Physiotherapists help patients with a wide variety of disorders and across the lifespan. Opportunities also exist in physiotherapy education and in research.

Professional recognition

The course meets the eligibility requirements for titled membership of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia, of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). They are eligible for the title of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist.
