Course description

This course deals with the business side of medicine, combining health, health information management and health informatics-technology disciplines. Students should have a wide choice of career specialisation in their area of preference; and content combines extensive practical experience with theory.

Graduates should help to meet the pressing demand across the health sector for experts in all areas of health information management, including health classification and activity-based performance management, management of health information systems, health informatics, analysis of health data and research using health information.

Application

Apply through VTAC. Applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Pi (Personal information) form if they wish other information to be considered during the selection process.

All graduate-entry students undertake a compulsory short bridging course to gain a basic understanding of the structure and function of the diagnosis and operative procedure classification system.

Please note students who haven't completed a degree in medicine, biomedical science, science (with studies in anatomy and physiology), dentistry, nursing, allied health, or health sciences must undertake a bridging course in anatomy and physiology as a foundation for further studies. This course provides an understanding of the function and structure of the human body.

Tutorials for both bridging courses are timetabled in addition to core subjects.

Indicative (2012): $18,400 per 120 credit points.

Additional costs (AUD)

Approximate costs include clinical coding books (A$395), and a National Police Check or equvialent (A$15). Accommodation costs for clinical placement vary according to venue.

Prerequisites

Bachelor of Health Sciences with approved course of study in health information management, or any Bachelor's degree awarded no more than five years ago (or subsequent postgraduate study and/or relevant work experience).

Additional information

Students must undergo police checks prior to commencing clinical placements.

Students with a non clinical background may be required to complete a bridging program prior to commencement of the course. This will be notified at time of offer.

Career opportunities

Graduates are likely to find roles in management of health information services, general administration or clinical risk management in health services and hospitals, specialised disease registries (eg cancer), government health departments, health computing firms and health information technology projects, health research centres, in the pharmaceutical industry managing the data for clinical trials of new drugs, and health screening programs (eg BreastScreen).

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible for full membership of the Health Information Management Association of Australia.
