Course description
This course aims to give students an advanced professional qualification in counselling. It offers them the chance to collaborate with clients to assess and present ongoing issues. Its approach is humanistic and experiential, but includes practical and theoretical introductions to a wide range of psychotherapeutic orientations. The course meets coursework criteria for registration with PACFA - The Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia, which requires a minimum of two years' training.

Course structure
In first year, students undertake six core subjects covering counselling theory and practice, ethical and professional practice, research-based approaches to counselling, assessment processes and group processes in counselling.
In second year, they undertake six coursework subjects, and a counselling placement each semester.
Contact hours
Full-time study entails one full day per week (seven hours) of block-mode teaching in the first year. In the second year students will have an additional one day per week at least in order to complete the counselling placement.

Prerequisites
Undergraduate degree and some professional counselling experience; those with other professional qualifications or who can demonstrate appropriate academic skills may also considered.
