Course description

The course is offered jointly through La Trobe University and selected TAFEs, and includes both university and TAFE subjects. It provides a professional teacher education qualification for those interested in or involved in teaching and training in environments such as industry or TAFE.

Course structure

The course comprises six 20-credit-point subjects, with 60 credit points of university subjects and 60 credit points of Advanced Standing (credit) for modules undertaken at the Institute of TAFE or private Registered Training Organisation (RTO). University subjects include Methods of Teaching (Adult), Curriculum Development and Design, and an approved 20-credit-point elective. The TAFE component comprises the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and 60 hours' VET teaching practice.

Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree or recognised professional/trade qualification that satisfies requirements for employment in the TAFE sector, and five years' industry experience. Special Entry may be available on the basis of equivalent professional qualifications or experience.

Career opportunities

Recent graduates have found employment as TAFE lecturers in a variety of learning areas, training development officers and instructors in the Australian Defence Force, nurse educators, adult educators in government and community organisations, and training officers in engineering, manufacturing and service industries.

Professional recognition

The course attracts a range of professional accreditations in the VET sector in Victoria and NSW, including sponsored Teaching Fellowships awarded through the Victorian TAFE Development Centre.
