Course description

This course aims to enable students to combine art and counselling for creative self-expression within a therapeutic environment. It offers first-level training in art therapy based on principles of humanistic psychotherapy, with an emphasis on the acquisition of art therapy counselling skills, utilising a range of approaches and techniques. Content emphasises the reflective process and its application to the artistic process.

Course structure

The curriculum includes subjects, one semester of clinical placement under supervision (250 hours), and an art therapy project. This course may be articulated into the Master of Art Therapy, which would then enable graduates to apply for professional recognition with the Australian and New Zealand Art's Therapy Association (ANZATA).

Prerequisites

Undergraduate degree in fine arts, graphic design, art education, psychology, counselling, social work, occupational therapy, psychology or nursing. Applicants also need to provide an artwork portfolio and demonstrate at least one year's professional experience in an art therapy or a counselling-related field, counselling skills training, and appropriate academic skills.

Career opportunities

Graduates need a one-year Master's qualification for full qualification as an art therapist.
