Course description
This course aims to give students a language qualification while completing their undergraduate degree. Studied concurrently with any La Trobe Bachelor's degree, it involves a three-year sequence in one language at beginner, intermediate or advanced level. Languages available are Chinese, French, Modern Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
In addition to practical language skills, the course offers the opportunity to acquire a basic understanding of the culture and society associated with each language. Students are also encouraged to apply for language scholarships, and in-country language programs conducted in selected Asian and European countries.
Course structure
Students complete a minimum of 120 credit points over three years. Taken concurrently with a Bachelor degree, this normally equates to two language subjects in first and second year, and three in third year.
Contact hours
Approximately 6-8 contact hours per week in addition to the contact requirement of the Bachelor's degree.

Prerequisites
The relevant language coordinator advises students regarding their level of entry and the appropriate sequence of subjects. No prior knowledge of a language is required to enter the beginners' stream. Students who've completed VCE language studies enter into the advanced stream.

Students may apply for a place in the Diploma in Languages once enrolled in any undergraduate degree at La Trobe University. Application forms are available from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Office.
Mid year entry may be available.
