Course description
This course provides pastoral care training that complements students' previous experience. The program is sufficiently comprehensive to equip graduates with the range of knowledge and skills required for pastoral care practice in a range of healthcare settings.
Course structure
Study areas include the history of pastoral care provision, pastoral practice methodologies, public health knowledge and skills, knowledge of the Australian health system, philosophical approaches to key issues in holistic health care provision, and selected cultural contexts of human religious and spiritual belief.
Students without a health sciences background can take public health electives, while those with a health sciences background can choose electives from a range of humanities and social science subjects. Students are encouraged to choose electives in consultation with the course adviser.

Extra requirements
All applicants must complete a Bachelor of Pastoral Care Supplementary Information form and submit to the Course Administration Officer by 28 October 2011. The form is available from the Selection Officer, or online at: www.latrobe.edu.au/publichealth/pastoral_care.
Non-Year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Pi form if they wish other information to be considered during the selection process. This may include information such as work experience or reasons for applying. Applicants may wish to provide other documentation in support of their application.

Pastoral care workers are employed by a range of healthcare institutions and agencies, including hospitals, residential aged care facilities, palliative care services, and community-based charitable organisations. Pastoral care qualifications also add value to existing professional qualifications, and are particularly welcomed by employers in the church-related agencies that provide a significant proportion of Australia's health and welfare programs.
