Course description
This course is designed to prepare graduates for both theoretical and practical roles in a broad range of health care settings with a specific emphasis on midwifery and nursing. Successful completion leads to registration as a Registered Nurse (Division1) and Endorsement to practice as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Students should develop skills to assume practice roles in a broad range of healthcare settings particularly in midwifery and nursing.

Course structure
Content is integrated so students cover both midwifery and nursing disciplines throughout the duration of their studies. NOTE: Students may be required to complete clinical placements outside University semester time.

Scholarships

Students should allow approximately AUD$300 for a uniform and equipment. Students can purchase these items from any supplier; they remain students' personal property. In addition, students must obtain a National Police Certificate - AUD$15.50, immunisations - AUD$250-470, and a First Aid II Certificate - AUD$160. All prices are approximate. Students need to complete the First Aid Level II Certificate course which is not conducted by La Trobe University. Clinical placements may incur accommodation and travel costs, and these will vary depending on the venue. Costs are subject to change.

Extra requirements
Non-Year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Pi form if they wish other information to be considered during the selection process. This may include information such as work experience or reasons for applying. Applicants may wish to provide other documentation in support of their application.
Prerequisites
VCE Units 3 & 4: study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in English (any); and one of Biology, Chemistry, Health And Human Development, Mathematics (any), Physical Education, Physics or Psychology.

Graduates are likely to work in general nursing, maternity and specialist hospitals, community health centres, extended care facilities, the armed forces and services for the intellectually disabled. The profession offers a variety of career paths that may lead to specialist practice, an academic career or management positions in health.

Graduates seeking registration must apply with the NMBA and meet the Board's registration standards. For more information, please visit the NMBA website. Please note the NMBA has set an English Language Skills standard. After registration, graduates may be eligible for registration in other countries as well as membership of the Royal College of Nursing Australia.
