Course description

This course offers an innovative, high-quality legal education with a strong global and social justice perspective and an emphasis on practical experience. It includes all the compulsory law subjects required by the Council of Legal Education for admission to practice in Victoria, and a wide range of law electives, including subjects relevant to science such as Intellectual Property Law, Law and Medicine, and Psychology and Law.

Students can choose science subjects from a wide range of disciplines including chemistry, computer science, electronics, genetics, psychology, and mathematics. But pllease note majors at Bendigo are limited to biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, psychological science and statistics.

Course structure

Students complete 15 compulsory subjects and seven electives in law, and science electives worth a minimum of 60/maximum of 90 credit points in first year, a minimum of 80 credit points in second year and a minimum of 90 credit points in third year. Honours is offered to high-achieving students; Honours in Law is available in the final year, while Honours in Science requires an additional year's full-time study.

Additional costs (AUD)

Depending on subjects , approximate costs include: laboratory coat - A$30, dissecting kit - A$40. Students can purchase these items from any supplier; they remain students' personal property.

Middle Band

Consideration is given to study scores in prerequisite studies, Chemistry, Physics, and Humanities (any). Consideration is also given to Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) criteria. In addition, a regional bonus may apply.

Extra requirements

Non-Year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Pi form detailing prior educational experience and reasons for interest in the course.

Non-Year 12 applicants may be asked to complete a maths test.

Prerequisites

VCE Units 3 & 4: study scores of at least 35 in English (ESL) or 30 in English (any other) and at least 20 in either Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics.

Please note: Bendigo students must transfer to Melbourne after 2 years (full-time).

Major studies include biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, psychological science and statistics.

Graduates can have their academic record and testament annotated according to specialisation (e.g. Bachelor of Science (Statistics).

Career opportunities

Graduates are likely to find employment opportunities in the legal profession, politics, business and commerce, government service, public administration, education, community legal services and public interest advocacy groups. Specific scientific knowledge can be used in areas of law such as environmental and planning law, intellectual property, medical negligence and health law. Professional recognition

All La Trobe University Law courses include the subjects required by the Victorian Council of Legal Education to qualify for admission to legal practice. Admission to practice as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria usually requires the completion of a traineeship (formerly referred to as articles of clerkship) or an approved practical legal training course (for example, the Leo Cussen Institute or the College of Law Victoria).

Science graduates can apply for membership of professional associations as determined by their major studies.
