Course description

This course aims to give beginning practitioners the knowledge and skills necessary to commence practice with ambulance services. Graduates should have a strong knowledge of the sciences basic to paramedicine.

The curriculum focuses on the principles of paramedic practice, including assessment, interpretation, clinical skills, safety, risk management and quality assurance, OH&S, and infection control and care in pre-hospital environments.

The course is unique in its focus on community practice, with a strong emphasis on chronic disease management and public health. It also encompasses broader professional practice including disaster and emergency management, health systems, professional ethics and legal responsibilities, administration and personal and professional development.

Course structure

In first year, students undertake core subjects with students from other health sciences courses, focusing on basic human biosciences and factors influencing health, and the roles of health professionals in the health and welfare sectors. Second year focuses on a range of health science subjects including counselling skills, community health promotion and law and management in the health sector.

The final two years develop skills specific to paramedicine. Students undertake clinical placements within the community in order to consolidate knowledge gained thoughout the course.

Additional costs (AUD)

Students should allow approximately A$300 for a uniform and equipment for use on clinical placements. Students can buy these items from any supplier; they remain students' personal property. In addition, students are required to undergo a National Police Check- A$15.50, immunisations - A$250-470, complete a First Aid Level II Certificate course - A$160. Accommodation costs for clinical placement (if applicable) vary according to venue. All prices are approximate. Applicants must obtain a National Police Check at a cost of approximately A$15, Working With Children Check (no cost), and immunisations before commencement of clinical placement. All prices are approximate.

Middle Band

Consideration is given to Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) criteria. In addition, a regional bonus may apply.

Extra requirements

Current Year 12 applicants with work experience must complete and submit a VTAC Pi form. Non-Year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Pi form if they wish other information to be considered during the selection process. This may include information such as work experience or reasons for applying. Applicants may wish to provide other documentation in support of their application.

Prerequisites

VCE Units 3 & 4: study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English, and 20 in two of Biology, Chemistry, Health and Human Development, Mathematics (any), Physical Education, Physics or Psychology.

Additional information

Career opportunities

Graduates are eligible to apply for positions offered by national and international ambulance services.

Professional recognition

While the ambulance industry is highly regulated, there are currently no professional registration requirements.
