Course description
This program is designed for people seeking a professional qualification in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). It addresses the need for highly trained OHS personnel, who are required to apply specialised knowledge and skills in professional practice. Course content and assignments are adaptable to the needs and interests of a diverse range of students.
Course structure
The Master's shares a common first year with the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety and Ergonomics. Depending on grades, students may take an optional third-year Honours program (part-time, 60 credit points).
In first year, students take four core subjects examining work-related determinants of health, OHS safety principles and legislation, monitoring of hazardous substances in OHS and ergonomics principles of work, workstation and plant design. In addition, they complete subjects relating to organisational theory/ management and research/evidence-based practice skills, and one relevant elective.

This course is offered via distance mode. Some on-campus seminars are available, but attendance is not compulsory.

Approved four-year degree, three-year degree with Honours, or three-year degree, in a cognate discipline (e.g. physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology, human movement). Those with a three-year degree must provide evidence of academic performance (and work experience) demonstrating suitability for admission.
Applicants may apply for initial enrolment in the Graduate Certificate if they
- wish to enrol in this level of coursework despite having the prerequisites to enrol in the Master's program;
- have a non-approved degree, or
- have satisfactorily completed relevant OHS studies at Certificate IV level and have at least three years' relevant full-time employment experience and the ability to demonstrate adequate academic skills.
Applicants in this category may be required to satisfactorily complete a written report on an assignment topic relevant to the course (set and assessed by the selection committee).

Career opportunities
Graduates can work as professional OHS practitioners. This course also emphasises research/evidence based and professional practice skills enabling graduates to work in many OHS related areas including policy development and management.
Professional recognition
Graduates will have all the educational requirements for certification as a generalist OHS professional, In addition, they will be eligible to apply for various levels of membership with the Safety Institute of Australia and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia depending on their undergraduate training and work experience.
