Course description

This course of study enables suitably qualified graduates to become instructors in orientation and mobility. The orientation and mobility instructor's principle role is to teach people with severe vision impairment to travel safely and independently by foot and public transport. Instructors are employed by organisations that provide orientation and mobility services to people with vision impairment or other disabilities. As well as learning about the theoretical basis of orientation and mobility, instructional methods and program development, students become highly skilled in the techniques of vision impaired mobility.

Course structure

Students take the following subjects: Theory of Orientation and Mobility A, Orientation and Mobility Methods A, Orientation and Mobility Methods B, Theory of Orientation and Mobility B, Ophthalmic Disorders, O&M Field Placement. Please note that observation placement in the field is undertaken before commencement of Semester 1.

Selection

Selection is based on academic merit and demonstrated interest in the provision of services to people with vision impairment or special needs.

Prerequisites

Degree in health sciences, education or behavioural sciences.

Career opportunities

Orientation and mobility (O&M) instructors work in the health and disability sector with people of all ages. Working environments may include the client's home, school, university, day centre or workplace. It may also including working with a client on public transport and within the wider community. Orientation and mobility is also one of the pathways for those interested in becoming a Guide Dog instructor.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Orientation and Mobility Association of Australasia.
