Course description
This course provides an advanced qualification for teachers of Languages Other Than English (LOTE). It can be taken as the first year of the two-year Master of Applied Linguistics. Graduates with an initial teaching qualification are qualified for employment in all LOTE teaching sectors.
Course structure
Core subjects include LOTE Teaching Methodology (at an introductory or advanced level), Bilingualism and Language Education and 22 days' Language Teaching Practice. Students select three additional subjects from Second Language Acquisition, Intercultural Communication and Education, Language Curriculum, Materials Development and Assessment, or other relevant subjects as approved by the course coordinator.

Recognised teaching qualification of at least four years' duration, with either three years' university study of the LOTE graduating at advanced level, or Bachelor's degree with native-speaker background supported by a language equivalence test at an approved institution. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree but no teaching qualification are considered for Special Entry. In such cases, the course does not provide a recognised qualification for teaching in schools.

Applicants must obtain a Working With Children Check Card before commencing the teaching practice component.

Graduates are qualified to work as language teachers.
Professional recognition
If completed with an approved primary or secondary teaching qualification, the course is recognised by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
