Course description

This course is designed for people who wish to develop communicative competence in Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN). It allows students to explore the use of AUSLAN in a variety of communicative settings and develop a thorough understanding of its basic grammatical structures.

Course structure

Students take subjects totalling 120 credit points. Students enrol in one of three streams: Language, Teaching or LOTE, and complete six subjects, including two core subjects. Two further subjects are offered to comply with Department of Education regulations for qualified AUSLAN teachers - Language and Cultural Studies A and B.

Prerequisites

Bachelor degree or equivalent. Applicants who can demonstrate native-like fluency in AUSLAN or practical experience in the Deaf community are considered for Special Entry.

Additional information

Part-time students complete one subject per semester, attending a one hour lecture or seminar per week and 2 or 3 hours of tutorial classes.

The course is recognised by the Department of Education and Training.
