Course description
This course aims to prepare graduates to practise as entry-level midwives across the wide spectrum of healthcare contexts and cultural groups. It aims to facilitate the competencies necessary to provide direct midwifery care and evaluate the impact of that care, and the capacity to advocate for the women in their care. Selection
IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 7.0 (please see new registration requirements in Professional Recognition); or
TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or
Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from La Trobe Melbourne; or
Approved equivalent.
Academic entry requirements
Applicants must be licensed to practise as a registered nurse in their home country; have at least 12 months of recent acute nursing experience as a registered nurse; and hold a Bachelor of Nursing degree or approved international equivalent. Documentary evidence of these requirements must be attached to applications with details of nursing employment, the name of the hospital, the position held, the area of work and dates of employment. An interview (by telephone or in person) may be required as part of the selection process, in order to secure a suitable clinical placement for the duration of the course.
Extra requirements
Students are required to obtain a National Police Check ($A15) and Working With Children (WWC) Check (no cost) before undertaking a clinical professional placement. This course has a clinical component. For more information, please visit: latrobe.edu.au/health/study/placements

International students must obtain temporary registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). This does not allow employment. Clinical placement requires approval from relevant external agencies and may require an interview.

Course Commences week eight of Semester 1. Applicants must apply to the hospital for their clinical placement at the same time they apply for the course.

Overseas study options are unavailable for international students in this program due to requirements to fulfil midwifery registration criteria in Australia.
Professional recognition
Please note the new NMBA standard of English language required to register as a nurse in Australia, introduced July 1, 2010. The standard requires a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 overall with no individual band less than 7.0, or an equivalent OET score. Students should check the NMBA website for the latest registration requirements:
