Course description
This course is designed to facilitate skills and leadership capacities relevant to a range of middle and senior management positions in local government, government departments, agencies and the private sector.
Graduates are likely to work with communities in urban, regional and rural areas, with community development planning agencies and in international settings. They also work with non-government organisations on rural and regional development issues, community development, land use planning and environmental and social policy at local, regional, national and international level.
Course structure
The course offers three streams - community development, urban and rural planning, and environmental and social policy - to suit specialist knowledge applications in community development, environmental and social policy, and urban and rural planning. Students complete ten subjects and a minor thesis (15,000 words).
Contact hours
Learning utilises both external study, on-line and conventional class-based delivery in block mode with a series of two-day (usually Friday and Saturday) lectures, workshops and tutorials to assist students who are in full-time employment to undertake the course.

Scholarships

IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or
TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or
Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from La Trobe Melbourne; or
Approved equivalent.
Academic entry requirements
An Australian Bachelor's degree, or approved international equivalent, or approved relevant work experience.

Graduates have diverse opportunities within government departments, including local governments, NGOs, research organisations, advocacy bodies and in the private sector in roles such as community development and management, advocacy, research, public policy development, social and community planning and urban, rural and environmental planning as part of multi-discipline teams in social and economic development projects in developed and developing countries.
