Course description

This course aims to enable students to combine art and counselling for creative self-expression within a therapeutic environment. It offers first-level training in art therapy based on principles of humanistic psychotherapy, with an emphasis on the acquisition of art therapy counselling skills, utilising a range of approaches and techniques. Content emphasises the reflective process and its application to the artistic process.

Course structure

The curriculum includes subjects, one semester of clinical placement under supervision (250 hours), and an art therapy project. This course may be articulated into the Master of Art Therapy, which would then enable graduates to apply for professional recognition with the Australian and New Zealand Art's Therapy Association (ANZATA).

Selection

IELTS (Academic) score of 7.5 with no individual band score less than 7; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 625 with a score of 6 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 263 with a score of 6 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 104 with no individual score less than 26; or

Completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B certificate at postgraduate (EFS PG2b (80%)) level conducted by La Trobe Melbourne; or

Approved equivalent

Academic entry requirements

Selection is based on a written application, submission of a portfolio demonstrating the applicant's skill with a range of visual art media, a minimum of one year work experience in human services (paid or volunteer work), completion of an introductory course in counselling skills and a personal interview with art therapy staff.

Extra requirements

Students are required to obtain a Nederal Police Check (A$15) and Working With Children (WWC) check (no cost) before undertaking professional placement. This course has a clinical component. For more information, please visit:

Career opportunities

Graduates require a one-year Master's qualification following the Graduate Diploma in Art Therapy to be qualified as an art therapist.

Professional recognition

Graduates are able to register with the Australian and New Zealand Art Therapy Association (ANZATA) after completion of the second level of training, the Master of Art Therapy.
