Course description
This course gives students the opoprtunity to explore visual arts in a range of practical mediums. It also aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of contemporary art theory, facilitating a valuable context for the development of their work. The flexible program allows students to focus on a single area of visual arts or to explore several areas of practice.
La Trobe's Bendigo campus offers outstanding workshops for visual practice, as well as gallery and exhibition space that is regularly used to showcase outstanding student work, helping students to obtain a professional profile during their final and Honours years.
Course structure
Students concentrate on five subjects throughout the degree: Theory and Methodologies in Studio Practice; Visual Arts Media Workshop; Comparative Studies in Visual Media; Art and Visual Culture; and Professional Studies - all of which relate to the studio disciplines listed above. Class formats include lectures, workshops, technical demonstrations, tutorials, individual staff-student consultation, and studio practice.
Students can have work experience in their discipline of choice in third year to develop an understanding of their selected professional area.
Contact hours
Staff-student engagement time (if studying full-time) - approximately 12 contact hours per week of studio study. Outside of these formal hours, students have access to specialist studios where studio technical support may be available for information and assistance.

Scholarships

Students will need to add to their art toolbox according to their selected major. Costs vary depending upon the equipment required, and it is usual to spend around A$500 per semester for materials on studio discipline subjects. These items may be purchased from any supplier; they remain students' personal property.
Selection
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe Melbourne; for more information please visit the La Trobe Melbourne website.
IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or
TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or
Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or
Approved equivalent.

The Academic Skills Unit at the Bendigo campus offers all students the opportunity to improve their language and learning skills. Career opportunities
The course is primarily designed to produce professional artists, although graduates also have the opportunity to work as art administrators, gallery curators and directors, art dealers and commercial gallery staff, art critics, historians, photojournalists, professional photographers, illustrators, secondary art teachers or art lecturers (with relevant further study).
