Course description

This course aims to provide students with strong academic and practical skills, as well as the attitudes required to comprehend, critically analyse and
evaluate new knowledge in nursing.

Students complete six compulsory subjects, covering acute care, mental health nursing, management of chronic conditions, clinical assessment, and mental health nursing.

Scholarships

Additional costs (AUD)

Students should allow approximately A$300 for a uniform and equipment. Students can purchase these items from any supplier; they remain students' personal property. In addition, students must obtain a National Police Check- A$15, immunisations - A$250-470, and a First Aid II Certificate - A$160. All prices are approximate. Clinical placements may incur accommodation and travel costs, and these will vary depending on the venue. Costs are subject to change. Students must provide information of immunisation status prior to commencing clinical placements, and complete a First Aid Level II Certificate course which is not conducted by La Trobe University.

Selection

Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B certificate at postgraduate (EFS (75%) PG2a) level conducted by La Trobe Melbourne; for more information please visit the La Trobe Melbourne website.

IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 6.5 (please also note requirements by the NMBA under Professional Recognition); or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 600 with a score of 6 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 250 with a score of 6 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 96 with no individual score less than 24; or

Approved equivalent.

Academic entry requirements

International students must be currently registered as the general nurse (based on a three-year nursing qualification) with a recognised nursing authority in another country, and applicants must provide a copy of their current nursing registration.

All students are required to obtain a National Police Check (A$15) and Working with Children check (no cost) before undertaking a clinical professional placement. Note the quoted costs are approximate only and subject to change.

Additional information

All successful applicants need to attend a Cornerstone Transition program in addition to La Trobe's International Welcome Festival Orientation before the start of semester, from 6 February 2012. The Cornerstone Transition program is crucial for preparing students for the successful completion of key subjects in the program. Please note: students enrolled in the program will be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) by La Trobe University at no cost.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised internationally as a Bachelor's degree qualification in nursing, however it should be noted that this course does not lead to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
