Course description

Offering professional accreditation in accounting and information technology (IT) - using computers to manage information - this course aims to give students a powerful skill-set in an increasingly competitive environment, equipping them to meet current industry demands. All students undertake industry-based studies.

Some industry-based learning scholarships are available.

Course structure

First-year studies include IT fundamentals, object-oriented programming, information systems, business law, accounting, and economics.

Later-year studies include intermediate object-oriented programming, information systems development, databases, mathematics, computer networks, auditing and taxation, management and management accounting, financial accounting, and electives from IT, business or other disciplines.

After second year, students can gain a year of professional IT experience through a paid industry-based learning placement.

Selection

Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; for more information please visit the La Trobe Melbourne website.

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

Prerequisites

Mathematics determined to be equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 (any) with a study score of at least 20; and 25 in English (ESL) or 20 in any other English.

Globally-accredited accounting firms have indicated a need for graduates who have both accounting and information technology qualifications. Employment opportunities include computer systems management, auditing and other managerial roles.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Information Technology has Australian Computer Society accreditation.

The Bachelor of Accounting has been accredited by both CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Graduates are eligible for membership with either professional accounting body or with other professional groups such as the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) and the Association of Chartered Accountants (ACCA).
