Course description

This professional accounting qualification addresses career-specific disciplines, including accounting, auditing, finance, business law and taxation.

In addition to fulfilling requirements for membership in key professional accounting organisations, students can select advanced subjects in management, marketing, finance and economics.

Course structure

Students usually complete subjects worth 120 credit points at each year level; this is mandatory at third-year level (with at least 90 credit points from subjects offered by the School of Accounting). Overall, students must complete 285 credit points via subjects offered by the Faculty of Law and Management.

All students graduate with an accounting major; structure also allows for an additional optional eight-subject major or four-subject minor.

Selection

Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe Melbourne; for more information please visit the La Trobe Melbourne website.

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

Career opportunities

Graduates may choose to work in the public accounting area specializing in auditing, investigative accounting, financial advising or taxation. Opportunities in accounting also exist in the private sector in large and small organisations and in the public and not-for-profit sectors.

Professional recognition

This course has been accredited by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). Graduates are eligible for membership to either professional accounting bodies or with other professional groups such as the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in London.
