Course description

This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to conduct applied research in health or community services settings (thesis stream) and to develop, implement and evaluate health-related programs and services.

It offers opportunities to learn more about a variety of specialities in the health field, to strengthen analytical skills and to consider furthering knowledge through research. The course aims to meet the needs of health professionals who have assumed or are likely to assume high-level responsibility for coordination and management of these programs and services.

Course structure

This course is a two-year (240 credit point) full-time program. Part-time study is available to local students. In first year, students complete compulsory and elective subjects, depending on their selected specialisation. Specialisations (major) include: Gerontology, Health Administration, Health Information Management, Health Policy, Health Promotion, Health Promoting Palliative Care, Health Evaluation and Research, Rehabilitation Counselling.

In second year, students build on the foundation subjects from the first year and undertake either a 30-credit-point research project or a 60-credit-point minor thesis.

Selection

IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or

Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe Melbourne; or

Approved equivalent.

Academic entry requirements

An Australian Honours degree, or a Graduate Diploma in a relevant discipline, or approved international equivalent; two years relevant professional experience; and evidence of capacity to undertake research, which is evaluated on the basis of a student's marks for a research methods subject; marks received for an Honours thesis; and papers accepted for publication.
