Course description
This degree aims to provide leadership-level professional training for counselling psychologists. The first two years include coursework, casework and placement components of the Master of Counselling Psychology, assessed at a doctoral level. In third year, students undertake an extended internship of 75 days, and in fourth year they complete a thesis of up to 75 000 words.

Students have to pay for class notes for the Research Seminar A subject and for accommodation and food for a single residential weekend group workshop.
Selection
IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or
TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or
completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe Melbourne; or
approved equivalent.
Academic entry requirements
APS-accredited three-year program in psychology, at least at a B average or equivalent, across all years; and APS-accredited fourth year with grade of atleast H2A, or equivalent.
Extra requirements
Applicants are ranked on the basis of academic and professional suitability for the purpose of selecting candidates for interview. The interview is used as the final means of selecting candidates for entry into the program. A quota may be imposed on enrolments based on available supervision and facilities. Applicants must demonstrate: a) a commitment to the pursuit of research as a significant element of their career aspirations; and b) compatibility with a humanistically-oriented program, in particular, applicants need to understand and accept the importance that staff place on the bringing of personal material to bear on their learning processes.

Additional information
Students are required to obtain a police check and Working With Children (WWC) check before undertaking a clinical professional placement.
Career opportunities
Graduates can expect to work in a range of settings - community mental health, schools and universities, and private practice. Graduates can also make a particular contribution to research in the field of counselling psychology. Potential jobs incude: counsellor, psychologist, human resources consultant, human resources development officer, private practitioner in psychology, human services officer, educational psychologist, school counsellor, family therapist, relationships counsellor, personnel officer, community health care worker, tertiary lecturer.
Professional recognition
The course is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society (APA) for full membership of the Society and, following one year of graduate experience in the field, membership of its College of Counselling Psychologists.
