Faculty of Health Sciences Research Update

Excellence in Research Awards for Faculty of Health Science (FHS) Staff

Three FHS academics have been recognised by the University for their research: Associate Professor Hylton Menz was given a DVC (R)/VC Excellence in Research Award for Mid Career Researchers while Associate Professor Jacinta Douglas was given a Commendation in the same category.
A Dean’s Excellence in Research Award for Early Career Researchers was given to Dr Nora Shields from the School of Physiotherapy.

New Director for Mother and Child Health Research Centre

Dr Rhonda Small has been appointed Professor and Director of the Mother and Child Health Research Centre.

Research presentations across three continents

Her paper on Quality of life, ageing and disadvantage in rural Victoria at the 2009 annual Australasian Association of Gerontology Conference in Canberra in November was featured in the conference publicity and as result, Jeni was interviewed on ABC local radio in Bendigo and across other regions with articles appearing in eleven local newspapers across New South Wales and Victoria. There were also two presentations at international conferences.
Involving older people in research: Australian experiences was presented at the GSA International Presidential Symposium in Atlanta, USA, while Volunteering in later life: The importance of role identity was part of an invited symposium on positive approaches to coping with the challenges of ageing in diverse cultures for the Asian Association of Social Psychology held in Delhi, India.
